Tonya was removed from figure skating because of a controversy that occurred in 1994, shifted her focus to boxing. Tonya started her career as a boxer in 2003. She gained popularity after she was featured in films and TV shows, which made her an international celebrity. The incident in 1994 when Tonya Kerrigan's opponent, Nancy Kerrigan, was attacked mysteriously just before she was scheduled to compete in the "National Championship" made her an international star. Many academics have used her tale to evaluate and judge students. A biopic, entitled I, Tonya, was also released in 2017.
